United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has now interactively utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology for the first time in the protection of the environment. UNDP and the Government of Japan are under a special project—'Pacific Green Transformation'—solely executed by them collectively. Being an important part of this project, recently a world-first AI environmental ambassador 'Una' has been introduced.
'Una' is really a digitally created computer character, whose mission is to increase public awareness on matters of environmental preservation, climate awareness and the use of renewable energy. By using AI technology, 'Una' will interact with local communities, policy-makers and international publics. She will popularize the message of environmental protection to the general public via video content, virtual events and social media storytelling.
'Una's' involvement is not limited to the virtual environment. She will also participate in various international conferences through holographic presence. This will allow her to interact directly with the world and give her input regarding environmental issues. This project is being celebrated as a gigantic leap, as it offers a new platform for global awareness-raising of environmental issues through the use of artificial intelligence technology.
These countries in which 'Una' is operating are four of the smallest island countries in the Pacific Ocean—Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Timor-Leste, and Vanuatu. These countries are the most exposed to climate change. 'Una' is playing a significant role in promoting clean energy, building climate policies, and promoting resilience among the people.
Kanni Wignaraja, UNDP's Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, has referred to the initiative as a "game-changing initiative." In her opinion, "AI is empowering deep and rich engagements with a wider audience, which will allow us to act together to manage the environmental crisis."
Una herself says that her greatest ambition is to raise the voice of the Pacific Island people around the world and to educate everyone about the need and potential for renewable energy. She also adds, "Our tomorrow depends on the decisions and actions of today."
The core part of the project is a documentary series directed in and around Una, which will be broadcast soon. It will show her life and her efforts with the local communities. There will also be an interactive website, where audiences will have an open dialogue with Una.
Overall, this project is not only a creative use of technology, but it is a call to action worldwide, which will prompt people to move towards ecological awareness. Una is a perfect example of the new opportunities that have been created in environmental protection using artificial intelligence.
